Sensitive folks and their pets are never good places to initiate any comparisons or criticism - founded, unfounded - makes no difference. Well rpiccand i hope you have your flame suit on b/c all the fanboys are gonna start blazing!! Is this thread going anywhere that will be of help? Well most likely not and a pissing match will soon follow but have fun folks just be nice. To my untrained eye the biggest difference is in the contrast and brightness and that could be all in the scanning and/or exposure. I'm glad you showed us how much leica is better.Įxample 8 is interesting as it is the only one where the leica shot is more exposed then the nikon. the leica makes a little "bump" in the bottom corners. on some older images where i don't remember what i shot with i have to look at the negs to tell the difference. I've used both - often at the same time - and never found anything to dislike about either. Ha ha, i'm staying out of this one, other than to say "i'm staying out of this one". Well i've used Leica, Zeiss, Nikon, Olympus and Soviet lenses, and in all cases they are better lenses than I am a photographer. Well, if you stop it down to say f/64, then it starts to get soft again. Also, FM2 is known for lightly over exposing. I believe both camera don't have spot-on shutter speeds. The Summicron 2/35 ASPH is probably the better option wide open but here I think the difference is minimal so maybe the results would be different with a CLA on the 20 year old 35mm cron.įlipperkoning, I used identical shutter speed and aperture. Summicron 2/35 ASPH might have been the better option, or indeed a clean and clear Summicron 2/35. Maybe your 20-year-old Leica lens "could benefit from a little clean up." The sharpest lenses I've ever come across are from Leica, Zeiss and Konica. and last, why not show the pictures here? also you need to know that the camera has correct shutterspeeds. when you are doing this kind of comparison you need to use a lightmeter to meter the scene and shoot manual. Well seeing the first two picture, i see the nikon camera has a slower shutterspeed so the the pictures look better.

(or maybe even russian if you want great optics for dirt cheap, and dont mind having to use cameras made of recycled steel ingots) But for price to quality, your paying hundreds more for very marginally better quality when you are buying a camera made by a european company compared to a japanese company. Not saying the european companies cant produce good optics, they can be out of this world as well. The japanese companies had to build reputation through high quality optics at a lower price, while european companies (except russian) could just rest on their laurels of being famous and a desired trophy. Well I wouldn't be surprised if the nikon had slightly better quality. Looking forward to reading your comments.

It's possible that the Leica lense I used (now 20 years old. I believe this test shows that, under these test conditions, the Nikkor 2/35 mm D has a slightly better piqué than the Summicron 2/35.

Composition and exposure are not the best - but the purpose of the test is only to compare the image quality.

I reduced the images 40% (bicubic sharper) and saved them as jpeg max without optimisation.

I used Ilford FP4 125 films it has been developed by a professional lab and scanned at home on a Canon MP970 at 2400 dpi to TIFF format. The Leica images are taken with a Summicron-M 2/35. I wanted to compare its images with the legendary Leica M6 - so I did a few test shots that I'd like to share with you. I am the happy owner of a Nikon FM2 which I find terrific.
